CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY FOR THERAPISTS

Presentation Description:

This 3-hour workshop will serve as a resource for mental health professionals, focusing on the complex biochemistry of psychopharmacology, presented in an easy to understand format. Most psychiatric medications are prescribed not by psychiatrists but rather by primary care providers. It is beneficial for mental health clinicians to be familiar with the proper use of psychotropic agents. This presentation covers the fundamentals of neurobiology and pharmacology. It focuses on the therapeutic agents used in the management of: Mood disorders, (Depression, Bipolar Disorder), Anxiety Disorders, Insomnia, Psychosis.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the basic principles of pharmacology

  • Identify the proper indications for the rational use of modern psychotherapeutic agents

  • Discuss their mechanism of action

  • Describe risks & benefits associated with their use

  • Discuss the basic “Do’s and Don’ts of Addiction Psychiatry

About the Presenter:

Dr. Aldo Morales, Medical Director, Retreat Palm Beach, was born in Havana, Cuba. His interest in pharmacology and addiction stems from his undergraduate degree from Rutgers College of Pharmacy, New Jersey. After studying abroad for his medical degree, he returned to New Jersey to complete a four-year Psychiatry residency at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Morales is Board Certified in both Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and is a Charter Member of the American Board of Addiction Medicine. He has served as a consultant to various State agencies and to Major League Baseball.

Mental Health Association in Indian River County is a 501c3 non- profit agency which provides immediate access to mental health care at our Walk-In Center in Vero Beach, and peer socialization/support at our three Drop-In Centers in Martin, Indian River and Okeechobee counties.

Retreat Premier Addiction Treatment Centers at Palm Beach provides personalized alcohol and drug addiction programming in a comfortable and safe environment. Retreat’s treatment and recovery programs are customized to each patient’s needs, focusing on treating the whole person using a well-rounded, holistic approach.

Dr. Morales is on the adjunct faculty at FAU, Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine in Boca Raton, FL. He has practiced for more than twenty-five years in Palm Beach and Broward Counties, where he has been an active voice in promoting the message that addiction is a treatable condition, not a moral failing.
